Burdened by a family secret, Adam White lands a job writing a newspaper’s lonelyhearts advice column and finds himself under the thumb of an editor who treats other people’s pain like copy. Montgomery Clift is Adam, whose sympathy for the readers behind the letters clashes with Robert Ryan’s William Shrike, a cynical newsroom boss bent on grinding down his staff. As the column pulls him deeper into strangers’ private lives, Adam is sent to meet Faye Doyle, a frustrated wife whose troubles quickly spill beyond the page, leaving him caught between his conscience, his job, and the woman waiting for him at home.
