After meeting on their college graduation night in 1988, Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew keep circling back to each other, with the film returning to July 15 as their lives shift year by year. Anne Hathaway is Emma, a young woman with literary ambitions and a clearer sense of purpose than the people around her, while Jim Sturgess's Dexter moves through the world with charm and privilege. Through annual snapshots of work, friendship, family complications, and bad timing, their bond changes shape as the years pass and that first day keeps taking on new meaning.
