Katharine Houghton's Joanna Drayton comes home with her new fiancé, John Prentice (Sidney Poitier), and an ordinary family dinner turns into a reckoning over race, marriage, and self-image in 1967 America. Spencer Tracy is Joanna's father, a liberal newspaper publisher whose convictions are tested, while Katharine Hepburn is her mother, Christina, who greets the engagement with a different kind of certainty. When John's parents arrive, the evening widens from one couple's announcement to a strained meeting between two families, with each side forced to confront its own assumptions.
