Metallica: Some Kind of Monster
Documentary141 min
After bassist Jason Newsted quits in 2001, Metallica enters one of its most unstable periods, with the band trying to hold together while recording St. Anger. James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett are followed through rehearsals, fights, long silences, and therapy sessions with performance coach Phil Towle as years of resentment start surfacing in public. The documentary tracks the group through Hetfield’s rehab stay, tense studio work with producer Bob Rock, and the search for a new bassist, with Robert Trujillo arriving as the band’s future is still unsettled.
