Sergeant Rutledge
CrimeDramaWestern111 min
Black cavalry sergeant Brax Rutledge is brought before a military court on charges of raping and killing a white woman and murdering her father, a superior officer. Woody Strode is Rutledge, with the case reconstructed through witness testimony and flashbacks, while Jeffrey Hunter’s Lt. Tom Cantrell is assigned to defend him. Directed by John Ford, the film frames its frontier action around the courtroom, with cavalry life, racial prejudice, and conflicting versions of the same events shaping what the officers and townspeople say they saw.
