On Santa Monica Beach, people start disappearing into the sand, some dragged under without a trace and others left mutilated, as police and beachgoers try to make sense of an attack coming from below. David Huffman and Marianna Hill are reunited as once-almost-married old friends pulled together by the death of her mother on the beach. Their search for answers leads back to abandoned buildings where they used to play as kids, while the question hanging over the shoreline is less who the killer is than what it is — and whether there may be more than one.
