On a bitter New Year's Eve, a poor girl roams the streets trying to sell matches and finding no buyers. Catherine Hessling is the child at the center of the story, forced into a sheltered corner by the cold. When she lights a match for warmth, the small flame opens onto visions of another world, shifting the film from street-level hardship into fantasy. Drawn from the familiar tale, the story stays close to her isolation and the fleeting images that appear in the fire.
