Fifteen-year-old Oliver Tate is trying to lose his virginity, keep his new relationship with classmate Jordana on track, and stop his parents’ marriage from coming apart in Swansea. Craig Roberts is Oliver, a self-conscious Welsh teenager who narrates his own life like a private novel, while Yasmin Paige’s Jordana is harder to read and harder to hold onto. At home, Oliver watches his mother (Sally Hawkins) drift toward a former flame, with Paddy Considine turning up as the new age presence from her past. Richard Ayoade’s film keeps Oliver’s romantic plans and family worries tangled together, with deadpan humor and a distinctly British adolescent point of view.
