After a lightning strike scrambles an experimental military robot, Number 5 begins acting less like hardware and more like a curious runaway, escaping the lab to figure out the world for himself. Steve Guttenberg is Newton Crosby, the designer trying to reach him before the Army does, while Ally Sheedy's Stephanie, an animal lover in Oregon, mistakes the machine for an alien and takes him in. As Number 5 absorbs television, slang, and everyday life, the chase tightens around a robot convinced he's becoming human.
