Truck driver Jean finds a dead man by the side of the road on his way home, reports it to the police, and quickly discovers that honesty has made him the obvious suspect. Jean Gabin is the driver at the center of the trouble, with his new truck impounded, the dead man’s widow accusing him of robbery, and a group of crooks leaning on him from the shadows. Jeanne Moreau and Gaby Basset are part of the world closing in around him as the story moves through roadside stops, police scrutiny, and the hard routine of a working man caught in someone else’s crime.
