Mija has grown up in the mountains with Okja, the massive genetically engineered animal she treats as family. When a multinational corporation takes Okja to the United States, she leaves home and follows, colliding with executives, activists, and the company’s publicity machine. Ahn Seo-hyun is Mija, a teenager moving through a much larger system with sheer determination, while Tilda Swinton’s Lucy Mirando puts a polished face on the business behind Okja. Bong Joon-ho carries the story from rural South Korea into Seoul and New York, where animal welfare, branding, and scientific ambition all pull at the same creature.
