After one last gold heist, aging gangster Max expects to retire in comfort with his partner, Riton. Jean Gabin is Max, a gentleman gangster whose plans begin to unravel after he confides details of the score to Josy (Jeanne Moreau), his younger mistress. Josy has secretly taken up with ambitious rival Angelo, and when Riton, Max’s old accomplice René Dary, is kidnapped and held for the hidden stash, Max is forced back into a world of ransom demands, rival thieves, and loyalties that turn fragile as soon as money is involved.
