In a rural Midwestern town, solitary farmer Ezra Cobb unravels after the death of his domineering mother, the woman who shaped his fearful, warped view of women. Left alone in the house they shared, he begins raiding graves to bring her back into his life, then turns that obsession toward the living. As disappearances and killings mount, the story follows Ezra’s ritualized descent and the ordinary community around him, where suspicion arrives slowly and too late. Roberts Blossom plays Ezra as a man drifting between pathetic loneliness and mounting brutality, while a newspaper columnist occasionally steps in to narrate the case as it grows darker and harder to dismiss.
