After his partner is killed, detective Eddie Ryan refuses to let the case go, even after his conduct gets him pushed off the force. Robert Duvall is Ryan, a hard-charging Irish cop chasing leads through 1970s New York, where the murder points toward a Puerto Rican gun-running operation and a crook called Sweet Willie. As Ryan keeps digging without a badge, the investigation turns into a personal vendetta shaped by street-level police work, political pressure, and the city’s rough edges. Eddie Egan, whose career helped inspire the story, appears as Ryan’s police lieutenant.
