Fresh out of prison, Michael Caine is Charlie Croker, a British thief who takes over a friend's failed plan to hijack a gold shipment in Turin and turns it into a citywide robbery built on traffic jams, timing, and nerve. With the mafia close by and the police on the streets, Charlie assembles a crew, three Mini Coopers, a pair of Jaguars, and even a bus to bring Turin to a standstill long enough to grab the bullion and disappear. The caper moves from backroom plotting to coordinated street chaos, using the city's boulevards, tunnels, and sewers as part of the escape.
