An aging count disappears inside his manor just before his death, apparently to torment the heirs waiting to claim his fortune. As the family searches the house for the missing body, the heirs begin turning up dead, and Jean-Marie (Jean-Louis Trintignant) starts looking into the killings with his fiancée Micheline, played by Pascale Audret, and the watchful Edwige. Georges Franju frames the mystery around a feuding household, hidden corridors, and a corpse no one can find, with the count’s final prank hanging over every room in the estate.
