After the murder of an eight-year-old girl, a once-respected detective takes over the case and refuses to settle for the obvious suspect. Heinz Rühmann is the investigator, whose search for a child killer grows increasingly personal as the inquiry stalls and suspicion spreads. What begins as police work turns into an obsession, with the detective pushing past procedure in hopes of forcing the murderer into the open. Sigfrit Steiner and Gert Fröbe figure into the widening circle around the case, as the film keeps its focus on public spaces, uneasy routines, and the strain that the hunt places on everyone involved.
