As the New Directions take shape, the students juggle auditions, romances, bullying, and the school’s rigid social pecking order. Lea Michele’s Rachel Berry is desperate for the spotlight, while Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester, the cheer coach, treats the club as a target. The series folds pop-song performances into high school drama, following a group of misfits trying to turn rehearsal-room chaos into something they can take onstage.
