Matthew McConaughey is Joe Cooper, a Dallas detective who moonlights as a hit man, hired by a debt-ridden dealer to kill his own mother for the insurance money. Chris (Emile Hirsch) brings the scheme to his dysfunctional family, but when he can’t pay Joe’s fee up front, the terms turn toward his sister Dottie. Juno Temple’s Dottie sits at the center of the bargain as the arrangement pulls her father and stepmother into an ugly, increasingly volatile mess. Directed by William Friedkin, the film keeps its action in a shabby Texas world of trailers, cash, and threats that never stay theoretical.
