After a savings-and-loan robbery, police trace the inside job to meek teller Leon Poole, but detective Sam Wagner's arrest of him goes disastrously wrong. Joseph Cotten is Wagner, the officer whose shot kills Poole's young wife; at trial, Wendell Corey's Poole answers with a vow of revenge. When Poole escapes custody, the case shifts from bank robbery to personal vendetta, and Rhonda Fleming is Wagner's wife, drawn into the hunt for an escaped prisoner intent on settling the score.
