After a bar fight leaves a man dead, Bill Saunders goes on the run in England, insisting the killing was an accident but unable to outrun the violence that has followed him home from war. Burt Lancaster is Bill, a former prisoner of war whose instability makes him both desperate and dangerous, while Joan Fontaine’s nurse Jane Wharton gives him a place to hide and believes his account of what happened. As the two grow closer, the police keep closing in, and a witness from the criminal world sees a chance to use Bill’s secret for his own ends.
