Can You Ever Forgive Me?

ComedyCrimeDrama107 min

In 1970s and ’80s New York, celebrity biographer Lee Israel has fallen out of step with publishers and can barely keep herself afloat. Melissa McCarthy is Lee, a prickly, funny writer who turns her talent for voice and detail toward forging private letters from dead literary figures and passing them off as the real thing. Richard E. Grant’s Jack Hock slips into the scheme as Lee’s drinking companion and uneasy partner, trailing her through used bookstores, bars, and cramped apartments. The story stays close to Lee’s daily hustles, her cat-filled home life, and the literary world she knows how to imitate.
