In 5th-century Britain, Arthur is reimagined as a Roman-British commander leading a band of Sarmatian knights as the Roman Empire withdraws and Saxon armies advance. Clive Owen is Arthur, caught between duty to Rome and loyalty to the land where he was raised, while Keira Knightley’s Guinevere enters the story as an ally in a fight over Britain’s future. Drawing on the idea that the Arthur legend has a historical core, the film trades courtly fantasy for mud, armor, cavalry charges, and a Britain splintering after imperial rule.
