In Revolutionary War-era South Carolina, Mel Gibson is Benjamin Martin, a former soldier who wants nothing more than to raise his family in peace after the French and Indian War. That plan collapses when Heath Ledger’s Gabriel enlists to fight the British, pulling Benjamin back toward a life he has tried to leave behind. As the conflict closes in on their farm, father and son are swept into the colonial resistance, while Jason Isaacs turns up as a British officer whose brutality sharpens the stakes at home as much as on the battlefield.
