Back from World War II and expecting to start a quiet life with his girlfriend, Nick Garcos instead learns that the man who crippled his father still controls the produce-trucking racket. Richard Conte is Nick, a young trucker who heads for the California markets to settle the score. Waiting there is Lee J. Cobb’s Mike Figlia, the mob-connected market boss behind the attack. Along the way, Nick joins forces with Rica (Valentina Cortese), a woman with ties to the same underworld closing in around him. Night hauls, produce yards, and backroom deals give the film its hard-edged picture of postwar American trucking and crime.
