An aging pop singer has spent decades coasting on old hits, surrounded by handlers and stuck in the routines of fame. Then his manager hands him a letter written to him years earlier by John Lennon, and Danny starts wondering what his life might have been if he had listened sooner. Instead of heading back on tour as planned, he checks into a New Jersey hotel and tries to change course. That choice pushes him toward a relationship with the hotel manager, played by Annette Bening, and toward the adult son and family he has long kept at a distance, forcing him to face the damage he left behind.
