After a sloppy item about a woman who keeps leaving fiancés at the altar blows up in his face, New York columnist Ike Graham (Richard Gere) heads to her small town to salvage his reputation. Julia Roberts is Maggie Carpenter, already preparing for another wedding and used to seeing her love life turned into public spectacle. Ike arrives expecting a scandal piece and another dash from the church, but following Maggie through wedding plans, local gossip, and a town that knows her too well starts to blur the line between reporting on her and getting pulled into her orbit.
