At the end of the Civil War, Rod Steiger is O’Meara, a Confederate veteran who heads west after the South’s defeat, joins a Sioux tribe, and takes a wife there, determined to renounce the nation he fought against. That break becomes harder to hold when the Sioux move toward open conflict with the U.S. Army, forcing him to decide where his loyalty now belongs. Sara Montiel and Brian Keith circle the life he builds on the frontier as the story shifts from postwar bitterness to a clash between adopted identity and old allegiance.
