After a crooked sheriff kills the rancher who gave him his first place to belong, William “Billy the Kid” Bonney turns revenge into a widening feud in the New Mexico Territory. Paul Newman is Billy, a volatile young gunman whose reprisals pull everyone around him into the violence. As Governor Wallace tries to secure a general amnesty and restore order, John Dehner’s Pat Garrett emerges as a counterforce in Billy’s path, with Lita Milan caught near the fallout. Arthur Penn’s film centers Billy less as a frontier legend than as an unstable, angry young man whose actions keep driving the territory further from peace.
