Carl Brashear is determined to become the U.S. Navy’s first Black master diver, pushing through institutional racism, punishing training, and the resistance of the men above him. Cuba Gooding Jr. is Brashear, a sailor whose ambition keeps colliding with Navy rules and old hierarchies, while Robert De Niro’s hard-edged diving instructor becomes his fiercest obstacle inside the program. Drawn from a true story, the film tracks Brashear’s climb through the ranks and the tense, shifting relationship between two men forced to face each other inside a rigid military system.
