Post-Civil War Indiana is caught between respectability and outlaw blood as the Reno brothers rob banks and trains, using the family homestead as a refuge while their brother Clint tries to stand apart. Randolph Scott is the federal agent who goes undercover to get inside the gang and track the men behind the robberies. As one holdup turns deadly and the town begins closing in, the story keeps its focus on the split within the Reno family: Laura, who has inherited the house, remains tied to her brothers, while Clint is forced nearer to the violence gathering around their name.
