In 1911, a widow leaves New York City for territorial Arizona with her two children and finds herself starting over far from anything familiar. Debbie Reynolds is the newcomer, first taking work as a ranch hand and then stepping into local politics when she runs for sheriff. Her new life also brings two very different suitors into the picture: Andy Griffith’s gambler and Steve Forrest’s rancher, whose rivalry keeps circling back to her. As the East gives way to the Arizona Territory, the film folds romance and small-town power struggles into its frontier setting.
