Christian Bale is John Preston, an elite law-enforcement officer in a future state where the government keeps order by forcing citizens to suppress emotion with a daily drug and treating any display of feeling as a capital crime. Preston’s job is to hunt down offenders and destroy the art and literature that might stir them. After he misses a dose, the system he has enforced from the inside starts to look different, and his place in it becomes harder to maintain as he moves closer to the resistance.
