After the death of her noble husband, Murasaki Shikibu is drawn into the Heian court to tutor the prince’s young women, and her own life begins to intertwine with the story she is writing. In 900 AD Japan, the film moves between Murasaki’s world and the imagined life of Hikaru Genji, a high-born man whose affairs and attachments ripple through the palace. Sayuri Yoshinaga leads the ensemble, with Yuki Amami among the court figures surrounding Murasaki, as the drama threads together imperial ritual, literary creation, and the intimate politics of court life.
