A temperamental Broadway producer discovers an untrained young actress and turns her into a sensation, only to find that success has made her every bit as theatrical and unmanageable as he is. John Barrymore is the grandiose impresario at the center of the chaos, while Carole Lombard is the protege who stops behaving like anyone's creation. Much of Howard Hawks's comedy unfolds aboard the 20th Century Limited on the trip from Chicago to New York, where rehearsals, disguises, ex-lovers, and professional grudges are all squeezed into the same elegant train cars.
