Beyond Therapy

The story

Pushed toward romance by their psychiatrists, Manhattan strangers Prudence and Bruce meet through the personal ads and make a mess of it almost immediately. Julie Hagerty is Prudence, earnest and game despite the bad start; Jeff Goldblum’s Bruce is no less awkward, and a second date finally suggests they may have found a match. Then Bruce’s live-in lover refuses to fade into the background, turning an already fraught courtship into a tangle of jealousy, therapy, and New York neurosis. Robert Altman directs Christopher Durang’s offbeat relationship comedy with Glenda Jackson and Tom Conti in the orbit of the pair’s increasingly complicated dates.
