When a public-opinion surveyor vanishes in the mountain town of Plainville, Fred MacMurray is Pete Marshall, the replacement sent down back roads to find out what happened. His search leads him to the Fleagles, where Marjorie Main’s Mamie Fleagle and her two sons seem tied to the disappearance — and to a scheme involving wealthy Grandma Fleagle, a slow poison, and an embroidered sampler that may point to hidden money. As Pete tries to make sense of the family’s story, every visit to the house gives him one more reason to think he’s walked into something far more dangerous than a routine assignment.
