A dying millionaire decides to hand out his fortune to strangers, choosing people he thinks have been beaten down, ignored, or cheated by the world. The film follows what happens after each recipient suddenly receives a million dollars: some chase revenge, some try to buy dignity, and some turn their windfall into chaos. Because it is told as a series of connected vignettes, each story takes a different angle on class, greed, and wish fulfillment, from broad farce to darker irony. In one episode W. C. Fields is a henpecked man who finally stops taking orders, while another with Gary Cooper shows how a fortune can unsettle ordinary lives as much as it changes them.
