Rob Brown is Jamal Wallace, a gifted Bronx teenager whose talent for writing comes into focus just as he earns a scholarship to a prestigious private school. After a chance encounter, he forms an unlikely bond with Sean Connery’s William Forrester, a reclusive novelist who begins mentoring him from the shadows of his apartment. As Jamal moves between his neighborhood and an elite academic world, the film follows the pressures around class, race, authorship, and expectation, with F. Murray Abraham and Anna Paquin among the people shaping his new life.
