A glowing green orb from outer space corners a young girl and unspools a series of dark, adult animated tales, linking sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and erotic imagery across distant worlds. Heavy Metal works as an anthology, shifting from one violent vignette to the next while a rock soundtrack from Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, and Cheap Trick drives the frame story forward. John Candy and Harold Ramis are among the many voices, alongside Eugene Levy and Joe Flaherty, in a film that jumps between different visual modes, from glossy space opera to comic-book grotesque.
