In the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, a drifting young man joins a traveling carnival that moves through drought-stricken towns, carrying its own mix of hucksters, outcasts, and secrets. Ben Hawkins, played by Nick Stahl, discovers he has unsettling powers that make him more than just another hand on the midway, and the carnival's fortune-teller and management seem to know more about his fate than they admit. As the troupe crosses a country worn down by poverty and dust, Ben's path begins to mirror that of a rising preacher, Brother Justin, played by Clancy Brown, whose visions and growing influence point toward a larger struggle neither man fully understands.
