After a cruel noblewoman forces a young woman and her father out of their home, the daughter leaves for Paris carrying a broken attachment to the noblewoman’s son, who would not go with them. Greta Garbo is the exiled heroine, first seen in a village romance and later remade as an opera sensation abroad. When she returns to her Spanish homeland, Ricardo Cortez’s aristocratic former sweetheart is drawn back into her life, reviving a relationship divided from the start by class, family pressure, and an interrupted wedding.
