In a sun-beaten Provençal village, an elderly landowner and his nephew secretly block the spring on a neighboring farm when its unexpected heir arrives to work the land. Yves Montand is the old farmer who covets the property for its water, while the new owner (Gérard Depardieu) keeps dragging bucket after bucket from distant wells as the summer heat bears down. With his wife and daughter struggling beside him, a simple inheritance turns into a quiet war over land, water, and what a village is willing to ignore.
