Found as a baby in a cabbage patch and raised by a kind old woman, Totò grows into a cheerful orphan trying to make his way through post-war Milan. Francesco Golisano is Totò, whose optimism draws a group of homeless people together to build a shantytown on an empty lot; Emma Gramatica is the woman who gives him his first home. When greedy developers threaten the settlement, Totò tries to protect the community and find an answer that the ordinary world may not offer, as Vittorio De Sica balances street-level poverty, comic invention, and touches of fantasy.
