Pamela Adlon is Sam Fox, a single working actor in Los Angeles trying to raise her three daughters—Max, Frankie, and Duke—while keeping a career, a household, and some version of a personal life intact. Sam is the parent, disciplinarian, chauffeur, and cleanup crew, dealing with everything from school problems to sibling blowups on her own schedule. Across the street, her English expatriate mother, Phyllis (Celia Imrie), stays closely entwined in the family’s daily life. The series stays close to Sam’s point of view as she moves between auditions, parenting battles, friendships, and the messier parts of being needed by everyone at once.
