In late-13th-century Scotland, Mel Gibson is William Wallace, a farmer turned warrior whose private loss sparks a violent uprising against English rule. After Wallace strikes back at the soldiers of a local lord, his village joins the fight, and the rebellion grows into a wider struggle over Scotland's future. The story moves from the Highlands to royal chambers and crowded battlefields, with Patrick McGoohan's Edward the Longshanks pressing the conflict from the English throne. Catherine McCormack is part of the life Wallace tries to protect before war overtakes it.
