Rashomon

CrimeDramaMystery88 min

After a samurai is killed in a forest and his wife is assaulted, four accounts of what happened turn a crime story into a dispute over memory, self-interest, and truth. Akira Kurosawa frames the case through testimony that keeps shifting in crucial details, moving between the court and the scene in the woods. Toshirô Mifune and Machiko Kyō are among the central figures in the competing versions, alongside Masayuki Mori and Takashi Shimura. Rain-soaked framing scenes and repeated flashbacks give the film its fractured structure, with each retelling exposing a different version of the same event.
