In rural Japan, a farming village learns that bandits plan to return after the harvest and take their crops. With almost nothing to offer, the villagers set out to hire samurai willing to defend people too poor to pay properly. A seasoned ronin, played by Takashi Shimura, begins gathering fighters, including an unruly swordsman played by Toshirō Mifune. As the seven men arrive, the story turns from recruitment to uneasy alliance: suspicious farmers must trust armed outsiders, and the samurai must turn a frightened village into a workable defense. Training, preparation, and rising tension lead toward a battle in which the harvest means survival.
