Love Me or Leave Me
DramaMusicalRomance122 min
Singer Ruth Etting’s rise in 1920s Chicago is bound up with the gangster who backs her career and tightens his hold on her life. Doris Day is Ruth, a performer moving from club dates toward stardom while depending on Martin “The Gimp” Snyder (James Cagney), the volatile racketeer who uses muscle and money to push her forward. As her songs make her a bigger name, the same relationship that fuels her success turns into a bruising marriage marked by control, ambition, and public image. Charles Vidor’s film blends show-business ascent with a darker portrait of the man behind it.
