Young volunteer Chris Taylor arrives in Vietnam expecting combat and finds a platoon already at war with itself. Charlie Sheen is the new recruit, dropped into jungle patrols, village raids, and night ambushes as the men around him split between Willem Dafoe’s Sgt. Elias and Tom Berenger’s hardline Sgt. Barnes. Drawing on Oliver Stone’s own war experience, the film follows Taylor through the daily strain of jungle fighting, where battlefield violence and abuses against civilians force him to confront what the war is turning his unit into.
